History | Board of Directors JORDAN HOUSE HISTORYOut of experiences in hospice work and cancer support groups came the question, “Where are the Christians?” in regards to caring for the dying and their grieving loved ones. Then came prayer for direction, followed by definite provision of our Lord. A Board of Directors was formed comprised of Christians from various churches in our community, our non-profit status was attained, and after many hours spent in research and planning, we were ready for recruitment of volunteers. Recruitment was done through Christian churches in our community. Training was done by experienced hospice workers, including a palliative care doctor, hospice nurse, chaplain, occupational therapist and bereavement counselor. Eighteen volunteers completed the three-day training program, fifteen of whom are caregivers. Jordan House cares for those who are enlisted in a Hospice program, such as Hospice Caring Project and Heartland Hospice. We supplement and support their work in situations where more help is needed than Hospice can provide. Our volunteers can help with bedside care, respite care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, gardening, etc. for those who are dying in their own home. Our focus is to provide a calm, loving, comforting presence, and to bring our Lord’s peace to those who are facing the end of life. We are happy to pray or read scripture with those to whom that would be a comfort, but are committed to caring lovingly for all, regardless of their spiritual preferences. |
